Preventing Elderly Injuries In Tampa During The COVID-19 Pandemic

BedRail

The COVID-19 pandemic is still not behind us. The Omicron variant is threatening to infect more and more people of all ages but continues to remain extremely susceptible to the elderly. Elderly people are forced into isolation where they may experience other physical issues, difficulty with basic tasks, limited mobility, depression and an increased risk for falls. The risk of falls increases each winter with slick weather outside, but indoor hazards can also cause falls.

What is the Risk of Falling for the Elderly?

Reports indicate that one in four people over the age of 65 will fall during the calendar year. The reality is that many elderly people might fall and not share it with a caregiver, child, or health provider due to shame or embarrassment. But once a person falls the first time, the risk of falling increases. This could be due to a vestibular or balance issue, a neurological issue, or a mobility issue. For example, if a loved one is suffering from pain, issues with gait or dizziness, this can all lead to a fall. In addition, some prescribed medications may have undesirable side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness and difficulty with joint pain.

How Can You Help a Loved One?

If your loved one is no longer able to care for themselves or they are showing signs of cognitive decline you may be eligible for a home health nurse. Our attorneys at Bubley and Bubley can help you identify a strategy for crisis planning. If their health has seriously declined, you may require Medicaid waiver assistance. If crisis planning is not yet necessary some of the best actions you can take are to elder-proof your home including minimizing the risk of falls by engaging in regular housekeeping, and keeping floors and stairs free of debris. Installing safety handrails, mobility aids and voice activated software to help with tasks like turning off appliances can be extremely helpful. It might also be a good time to discuss finding housing for your loved one that is mobility friendly.
